About Randolph Air Force Base
Randolph Air Force Base located in the town of Universal City is about fifteen miles in the northeast area of San Antonio, Texas. Randolph Field was dedicated on June 20, 1930, as a flying training base and continues in this mission today. Randolph Field was named after Captain Williams Millican Randolph, who crashed his AT-4 on takeoff returning to duty at Kelly. He contributed immeasurably to the progress of aviation and served on the base name selection committee.

Randolph Air Force Base trains pilots, navigators and electronic warfare officers for military service in fighters, bombers and cargo aircraft. Built in 1930, the base was designed as the perfect “air city” to support basic and primary flying operations, flight instructor training and combat crew training.

Randolph Field Historic District, located at the center of Randolph Air Force Base, is a National Historic Landmark. The district consists of 397 buildings and other features, most of which were built between 1929 and 1932, in an area of approximately 405 acres.

Air Force pilot training is the focus of the Randolph mission and while the base has a large contingency of support personnel, the pilots at Randolph AFB are primarily here in San Antonio for training. The Air Education and Training Command (AETC) is headquartered at Randolph AFB and is the primary training vehicle for both instructor pilots as well as officer pilot training. Most all pilots serving in today’s Air Force have spent time in a training capacity at Randolph.

Flight instructor training and combat crew training is commonplace at Randolph Air Force Base, as are flying and technical training. Each year, about 350 instructor pilots graduate from the wing’s 13-week training course. Using teaching techniques in the aircraft, the simulator and the classroom, trainees learn how to simultaneously fly and instruct.

Mission
With a multifold mission, the 12th Flying Training Wing conducts instructor pilot training in the Raytheon-beech T-6A Texan II, Cessna T-37 Tweet, Northrop T-38 Talon and Beech T-1A Jayhawk aircraft. In addition, the wing conducts Joint Specialized Undergraduate Navigator Training and electronic warfare officer training in the Boeing T-43 medium-range turbofan jet. The 12th Flying Training Wing has three groups: operations, mission support and medical, and a maintenance directorate. The 12th Flying Training Wing trains and equips its people to meet the Air Force’s worldwide Air and Space Expeditionary Force commitment. In addition, it is responsible for the Air Force’s Advanced Instrument School (AIS).
